What Is a Slime Mold?
Despite the name, a slime mold is not a fungus, but a wonderfully enigmatic member of the Protista kingdom. Slime molds spend most of their lifecycle as single-celled organisms in the soil. Under the right conditions, they merge into a giant, multinucleate, protoplasmic blob that can crawl through its environment like an amoeba, searching for food and an optimal location to dry out and release its spores.
